At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His primary duty was essentially to care for his flock of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the wind across the solo tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, guarding his responsibilities imbued in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
However, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. In one such instance because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plot.
Stories of wolves preying on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One morning he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This game persisted for a few more days. However, one noon, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today here as it was then.
